‘Good News’ by Megan Thee Stallion Review: A Raunchy Ride Into Rap’s Spotlight
Megan Thee Stallion
Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion, born Megan Pete, is hugely famous, with millions of social media followers, a chart-topping single featuring Beyoncé, and sex-symbol status that has put her on the covers of glamorous magazines. And she’s also respected for her raw skill as a rapper. While her style is rooted in her native Houston—see her proudly Southern drawl and bawdy lyrics about street life—she’s versatile, able to switch modes in the vein of Nicki Minaj, an artist she admired growing up. And Megan, now 25 years old, has been immersed in hip-hop all of her life—her mother was a rapper on the Houston scene. She’s been recording for a few years and has released several mixtapes and EPs, but her debut album, “Good News” (300 / 1501 Certified), just came out Friday—a sign of how long it can take to navigate the music business labyrinth.
“Good News” arrives during a tumultuous year for its creator. In July, Megan was involved in an incident with rapper Tory Lanez (born Daystar Peterson) in Los Angeles that led to her being treated for injuries in a hospital and him arrested on a gun charge. The initially sketchy details of what transpired emerged in pieces over the next few weeks—he was eventually charged with assault with a semiautomatic handgun and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle (he pleaded not guilty), while she penned an op-ed in the New York Times that said she’d been shot, and also lamented society’s inability to protect Black women or take them seriously. The dramatic turn only added to the anticipation surrounding her record’s release. How would she address the episode?
She gets right to it with “Shots Fired,” the opening track on “Good News.” Over a floating, spacious beat, she tears into her alleged assailant, expressing anger but also amusement, as if impressed by her own power to belittle him. This superhuman confidence is the essence of Megan’s art—she acknowledges vulnerability as an idea but rarely succumbs to it, preferring to steamroll whatever obstacles she finds in her path. So while she confronts the alleged shooting incident directly, she sounds like she’s ready to move on.
With “Shots Fired” out of the way, Megan is clear to rap at length about her favorite subject, which, as anyone who heard her summer hit “WAP” with Cardi B knows, is sex. She’s the latest in a long line of female artists who turn raunchy obsessions into something many recognize as empowerment. While she rhymes about carnality almost constantly, and with a sometimes shocking or hilarious level of detail, her fantasies never seem reckless or personally dangerous—she’s going after what she wants, with the self-awareness and focus to know how to get it.
On the record’s third track, “Cry Baby,” which features a booming low end and a verse from gravelly North Carolina rapper DaBaby, she casually offers “If I make up the rules, then I don’t think it’s cheatin’ / Jordan, Tommy, Timothy, Daniel,” running down her conquests while remaining in charge of her pleasure. The positively filthy party number “Do It on the Tip” finds Megan rapping alongside Miami duo City Girls, one of the few acts that can match her for gleeful lewdness. They sound like they’re having a ball in the studio, and the feeling is contagious.
Backing tracks from a host of young producers—midtempo beats, lots of space, a catchy hook or two from a sample or keyboard—provide a frame for Megan’s outsize presence but don’t draw too much attention to themselves. The unrelenting fixation on a single subject means the tracks are differentiated mostly by her ever-shifting flow. On “Sugar Baby” she foregrounds her easy-rolling twang, where vowels are elongated and curled for emphasis, like putting a few extra shakes of hot sauce into a recipe, while “Body” finds her effortlessly navigating a double-time pattern over a quaking bassline.
Though her skill on the microphone never falters, the narrowness of the subject matter on the songs that follow “Shots Fired” can get a little monotonous, depending on your appetite for lascivious imagery. The back half of “Good News,” which includes the “Savage” remix with Beyoncé, is more musically interesting. On “Intercourse” she trades libidinous verses with Jamaican vocalist Popcaan, whose voice is heavily processed via Auto-Tune, while “Girls in the Hood” interpolates and updates “Boyz-n-the-Hood,” the 1987 song from NWA member Eazy-E that was an early signpost for gangsta rap. Megan matches the singsong cadence of the original perfectly while updating the story to highlight the steely resilience of girls she grew up with.
Late in the record, “Don’t Rock Me to Sleep” is a complete change-up, a frothy and melodic synth-pop number where Megan alternates singing and rapping. She sounds slightly tentative in this role, which works to the song’s advantage, lending a hint of uncertainty to an LP of supreme assurance and possibly opening a door to another avenue of expression. “Good News” is the right album at the right time for this artist, consolidating her strengths and turning the page on a year marked by trauma. But the glimmers of what future albums might bring, evident on almost-there curveballs like “Don’t Rock Me to Sleep,” are just as intriguing.
