When we got into firefights in Afghanistan, the Taliban would just seem to disappear into thin air after an engagement.
It’s said that they would sometimes set up their positions near giant holes in the desert ground, leap down into them, and follow underground tunnels as their getaway route.
Afghanistan is full of underground tunnels that are supposed to direct mountain water to dirt farms for irrigation. I knew these systems as being called “Karez”, but they’re also referred to as “Kariz” and “Qanat”. One of the soldiers in my unit actually fell down one of these holes at night and broke his back .
