If China and Russia went to war, who would the U.S. back and why?

The United States would not support either side. China and Russia are nuclear powers. The highest priority for every government in the world not in the direct line of fire would be containing and ending the conflict before either side considered using tactical nuclear weapons.
This would be true no matter what assurances either government provided that they would never consider this action.
Hopefully, military action would be confined to the Chinese-Russian border region in eastern and central Asia and a ceasefire could be arranged in a few days or weeks.
