In the U.S., our coffee is noticeably poor in quality when compared to other countries. Why is our coffee subpar? What is it about us, that does not seem to actually care about the quality?

I'm about to tell you something that may be disturbing. Therefore I'm going to give you a moment to prepare. Please loosen any restrictive clothing and make sure you're either seated or in a stable position. If you happen to be driving while you're reading this post, first of all shame on you! Secondly please pull over in a safe location and turn off the engine. Ready? Here goes:
Coffee is not that important to some people.
Yes, shocking as it may be, there are people who are perfectly fine with drinking brown swill. they're not drinking the coffee to enjoy it, they're using it as a delivery system for caffeine. Maybe they're cold in the morning and they just need to warm up. Maybe they've never had really good quality gourmet coffee and don't know what a good cup of coffee is supposed to taste like. Maybe it's a money issue. They'd rather plunk down $0.65 for a cup of brown swill to deliver them some caffeine, at which point they will get on with their day, than part with $3.75 to get a gourmet cup of caffeine delivery.
Okay, I've been so much sarcastic and tongue in cheek to this point but I can't help myself. In reality with a country of over 330 million people, not everything is as equally important to some as it is to others. Good coffee is very important to me, but I'm not much of a wine aficionado. While you won't see me cracking open a bottle of Boone's farm Strawberry Hill, I'm also not going to be reaching for that $300 bottle of Chateau Dans La Table de Ma Tante. I'm sure it has a wonderful nose and a brilliant finish on the palate, but that's just not important to me. I would rather spend about $10 for a decent bottle of wine, one which I probably won't finish, and put the extra money into good quality steak and some fresh vegetables. Some people are astounded by this. They probably can't imagine someone being so gauche. I say to each his own. I respect and admire their intense interest in fermented grape juice. If it brings them joy who am I to demur?
