What would you say to a 5-year-old that just found out they were going to lose one of their parents?

When my wife died, my boys were 12 and 9. We took them out to a day of fun stuff. We spent the whole day together. We went out for breakfast, we took the to a video arcade, went to a movie, we made sure it was their day. Then we took them out to dinner at a fancy restaurant. While we were eating, my wife told them, when we get home we need to talk to you guys. when we got home, we all were sitting at the kitchen table I got it going by saying, everything is going to be alright and the your mother has cancer. I look at Kevin, My youngest and I could see him tearing up and Bobby, my oldest was moving towards him to comfort him. The next day, after church we all went out and took a picture while we were all dressed up and had a painting done of the best one. Each of the boys picked out their favorite. And my wife had a 5x5 made and each of them put it on their night table.
Gail my wife wrote each of them a special letter which they read at her funeral. We had one final Christmas together. And she passed away before New Years.
That was almost 40 years ago and we still miss her.
