Has a patient ever said something that sent a chill down your spine?

I had a patient in ER, a little boy. His mother and her boyfriend brought him in and said he had a head injury from falling between the bed and the desk. It didn’t look like that kind of injury, plus there were various places on top of his head that had overlapping swollen “goose eggs” full of fluid in different stages of healing. In those cases of possible child abuse, we separate the child and take them for x-rays of their entire body.
I asked the mom separately if she thought her boyfriend might be causing the boy harm. She was an adult dancer, stripper. While she was working, her boyfriend babysat the child. I contacted child protective services and they removed him from their care. For exactly 3 months! The mom came to see me and said” We are going out of town today. They gave me back my boy. I have another job out of town”.
I could only look in horror to see them leave. I never heard from them again. I wish I knew if the boy was still alive.
