What’s a childhood secret you’ve never told your parents about?
Answered by: Bill Kiefer
I never told my parents about my “secret.” They found out about it on their own.
I was a teenager in high school when a friend gifted me a pornographic magazine. This particular issue featured an attractive forty-something year old woman who was every school boy’s dream.
Being a quite innovative lad (sarcasm), I hid the magazine in a brilliant place: under the mattress of my bed.
Fast forward five or so years. I’d enlisted in the military and was stationed in Europe when I received a letter from my dad, explaining and apologizing that he’d accepted a job offer in another state and they were moving. This didn’t upset me at all and in my return letter, I stated this. The pornographic magazine had left my mind years ago. The thrill eventually wore off after I’d experienced my personal sexual encounters.
Fast forward (again) a few decades. Mom and dad went through a contentious divorce and dad had died.
While on one of my visits to my mom- she lives several states away - a conversation turned to their move from North Carolina to Ohio while I was overseas. Mom, who has always been unabashed, spoke of how they discovered the magazine while packing up for the move.
This was an embarrassment to me. As I previously said, I’d completely forgotten about the magazine. I felt my face turn red.
I can still hear mom’s words, and I quote: “I never knew that’s what I looked like from behind.” (She wasn’t the woman in the magazine. She was referring to what women look like when photographed from behind. Just wanted to clarify.)
Edited for clarity.
